Human Trafficking

Author: Darcia Helle  //  Category: Things I've Read

The January 18th edition of Time magazine contains an article on human trafficking (slavery). In it, there is this statement: “…the U.S. currently spends more in a single day fighting drug trafficking than it does in an entire year fighting human trafficking.” (Emphasis is mine.)

I had read this in an incredible, horrible, eye-opening, heartwrenching book by E. Benjamin Skinner called A Crime So Monstrous: Face-to-Face with Modern-Day Slavery. That particular quote once again caught my attention. We are tossing billions at a 40-year-old “War on Drugs”. Drug use is, for the most part, a victimless crime. Or, at least, the victims are doing the damage to themselves.

Yet we are spending a mere fraction of those billions on fighting human slavery. (Make no mistake, there are slaves right here in our own country.) So, I’m curious, what bothers you more? A guy down the street who smokes pot after work? A woman who is messing up her life with cocaine (and probably needs rehab but not prison)? Or the rich couple who own an underage foreign child imported to clean their home? Or the twisted nut who bought an American kid from an underground network and now keeps her as a sex slave?

Where would you prefer your tax dollars go?

My War Analogy

Author: Darcia Helle  //  Category: General Nonsense

I have chronic, late-stage lyme disease. This means that creepy little bacteria have taken up residence in my body. I think they’re building condos.

Ever have an uninvited guest stop by that you then cannot get rid of? That’s how I feel about my lyme tenants. I did not invite them and now they will not go away. I’ve tried serving them with an eviction notice (long-term antibiotic therapy), which they only laughed at. In fact, they are so at home in my body that they are sending out invitations to their cousins (co-infections).

You know those “bombs” that you can set off in your house to get rid of fleas? I’m wondering if something like that would work internally.

Alas, for now I am stuck sharing space with these disgusting creatures. Some days they gain the upper hand and reign supreme over their internal world. Other days my internal guards (immune system) do a good job of banishing them back to the war-torn neighborhood they originated in, which I have permanently lost control of.

Such is the way of war. Neither side truly ever wins.

Thoughts On War…

Author: Darcia Helle  //  Category: Quote Me

I am sick and tired of war. It’s glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation. War is hell.

One Of The Best Gifts Ever!

Author: Darcia Helle  //  Category: General Nonsense

This is the chaise lounge my husband just finished making for me! He also gutted and remodeled the room it’s in, which is my very favorite room in the house! (That’s largely because it’s my office/library.)
