1991 – The Year of Secrets

Author: Darcia Helle  //  Category: General Nonsense

My new release – Secrets – is set in 1991. Those of you who have followed the evolution of this novel know I didn’t choose that year for the setting. I actually wrote the original manuscript in 1991. When I decided to revise and publish this one, I realized updating the book to our current year, with our current technology, would have changed too much about the storyline. While editing and revising, I had fun flashing back to what life was like back ‘in the old days’. Twenty years, 2 decades, doesn’t seem all that long. But the changes we’ve experienced in that relatively short time are astounding. I thought I’d take you back on a little journey through time, back to the year Samantha’s story was born. First, though, I have to show off the book:

SURVIVAL

Samantha’s monsters aren’t under the bed; they’re the people she calls Mom and Dad.

ESCAPE

She makes it out alive, her sanity barely intact.

LIES

She creates a new past that fools everyone, including herself.

HOPE

A life filled with love and security teeters on its base of lies.

SECRETS

When it all comes crumbling down, will Samantha make it out alive?

***

 Back in 1991:

Jeffrey Dahmer is arrested after the remains of 11 men and boys are found in his Milwaukee, Wisconsin apartment.

Former U.S. postal worker Joseph Harris kills his former girlfriend and her fiance and two former co workers at the post office in Ridgewood, New Jersey, inspiring the phrase ‘going postal’ .

Vicious police brutality videotaped in California in the case of Rodney King arrest.

The release of Nirvana’s album Nevermind, which many believe signified the Grunge era that dominated the music scene up to the mid-90′s.

The Silence of the Lambs is one of the most popular movies in theaters across the U.S..

Pearl Jam, one of the most popular bands in the ’90s, releases their album Ten.

A gallon of gas cost $1.12.

A dozen eggs cost 85 cents.

The U.S. president is George H. W. Bush.

The biggest changes, though? We had none of these in our homes:

And the cell phone, or, then, mobile phone, looked like this:

Quite the progression in 20 years of technology.

I hope you’ve enjoyed our journey back in time. And, of course, I hope you’ll join Samantha and learn her Secrets. You can find it in print and Kindle format on Amazon:

You can also find it on Barnes and Noble for Nook and in print, and in all ebook formats on Smashwords.

Thanks for reading. :)

Fascinating, Darcia. And not that long ago at all!

It doesn’t feel that long ago to me, either. I’m amazed when I think about all the changes in that relatively short period!
