Today I have the honor of telling you about two ladies who paint literary masterpieces. and they’re sharing one of their creations free! In honor of Dad’s everywhere, Magdalena Ball and Carolyn Howard-Johnson are offering Imagining the Future (Celebration Series of Poetry Chapbooks) as a free Kindle download from May 25 through May 29. This is a unique gift for fathers, but is also a beautiful book for anyone. I had the pleasure of reading this one a couple of years ago and my thoughts, in part, were this…
From the heroic to the mundane, the poems in this book are a beautiful tribute to all fathers. True magic.
Here’s a look at the book:
As part of the special celebration gift book series, Carolyn Howard-Johnson and Magdalena Ball have produced a poetry chapbook focusing on fathers, husbands, and men in general. Imagining the Future: Ruminations on Fathers and Other Masculine Apparitions makes a wonderful gift for Father’s Day or anytime you want to say something unique in a way that only poetry can to a special male in your life.
Magdalena has a touching story about the beautiful cover:
When I was quite young, my grandparents bought and did up a boatyard in Island Park, Long Island where they lived. As my grandmother was a great cook and entertainer, the boatyard (and home) became a family hub (and hub for their 4 children’s friends too) and we all spent a lot of time there. They later moved to Florida and sold the boatyard, but my uncle (the composer www.rickyiangordon.com) took the photo while he was visiting some time later during the winter not long after my grandfather died and emailed it to me. The picture seemed to encapsulate for me all my feelings about the past, about love and loss and fatherhood in general (my grandfather was something of a father figure to me). I immediately wrote the poem “Boat Yard” in response, which gave us the title for the book as well. So I felt, and Carolyn agreed, that the image would make the perfect cover with its masculine colours, and soft, nostalgic appearance.
Walking the fuzzy line
between deference and defiance
a cold wind opens the door
into frictive fictive
Holding onto your absent body
I find something
a heart once broken
beneath my own chest.
The snarl of your lip
against kindness in your eyes
how odd to find you
so many years after you disappeared.
Snow covers everything
not enough for fairytale glitter
just desolate dust
darkening teal on the horizon
together we swim
through a remembered past
imagining the future.
