The final post in my Meet The Characters blog series comes to you from Commander Joe Madsen of The Conduct Series by Jennifer Lane.
Travelogue for Commander Joe Madsen
(uncle to series hero Grant Madsen)
He’s like a son to me—a son I refuse to lose.
My fists clench as the “fasten seatbelts” sign lights up. This danger my nephew Grant faces is my fault. Why did I have to open my huge mouth? Why did I have to tell Grant how much I regret not fighting his Mafia family?
Sure, his father destroyed my sister and her two sons, and I’ll never forgive myself for failing to save them. But owning up to this regret led Grant to go overboard with his savior complex, and as a result he hovers on the precipice between life and death. By the time we touch down in Chicago, it may be too late.
A few months ago, Grant went undercover to infiltrate the Russian Mafia—to fight back against men like his father. I have to do this, he told me. I gotta fight for the good guys. I don’t want the same regrets as you.
My stomach twists, wishing I could tell him And I don’t want to regret losing my one remaining family member. But I may never get that chance. I feel a flutter of fear spike my heartbeat. The FBI has to get him back. If Grant dies, who will take care of his nephew, Benjamin? How will Sophie ever move on from such a loss?
The captain announces our initial descent. I straighten the collar of my uniform, then brush my hand down the khaki tunic. I wish smoothing out the worry lining my face were as easy.
The flight attendant smiles brightly as she strides by and tosses my cup into the garbage, but I can’t muster even a nod of thanks at this point. As we begin our descent into O’Hare International Airport, I clutch the armrests.
We are indeed descending.
People fascinate the psychologist/author (psycho author) known as Jennifer Lane. Her therapy clients talk to her all day long about their dreams and secrets, and her characters tell her their stories at night. Jen delights in peeling away the layers to scrutinize their psyches and emotions. But please rest assured, dear reader, she isn’t psychoanalyzing you right now. She’s already got too many voices in her head!
Stories of redemption interest Jen the most, especially the healing power of love and empathy. She is the author of The CONduct Series—romantic suspense for adult readers—and is currently at work on the third and final installment: On Best Behavior. Streamline is her first foray into writing for young adults, but she’s found this sort of writing even more fun. A former college swimmer, Jen was able to put a lot of her own experiences into this book.
Whether writing or reading, Jen loves stories that make her laugh and cry. In her spare time she enjoys exercising, attending book club, and hanging out with her sisters and their families in Chicago and Hilton Head.
With Good Behavior was a Goodreads Choice Award Nominee for 2010 Romance of the Year.
