About the Book Interview with Seth Bleuer
Guy’s Odyssey was inspired by my own experiences in Iraq from 2004-2006 and Afghanistan 2008-2009.
Tell us about your main character.
Guy is a young soldier who gets blown up in Iraq and wakes up in a future he doesn’t remember. He is hopelessly lost in time and finds himself questioning his own sanity. Guy is funny, sarcastic and witty, even in the face of mortal danger.
Which is your favorite minor character and why?
My favorite minor character is a secret! It is someone in the story that is hinted at and woven throughout, but not really brought to light until late in the novel.
What is your favorite personality trait of your main character?
I think my favorite thing about Guy is his sense of humor. Even in the face of mortal danger Guy never loses his witty sarcastic humor.
Your character is at a bookstore. Which section is he/she shopping in?
What book is in his hand right now? Guy is holding a copy of The Time Machine by H.G. Wells.
Your character has the music blasting. What’s playing, and what is he doing while listening?
Rooster by Alice in Chains is blasting. Guy used to love this song but now he is lost in his memories staring far into the distance, yet somewhere else entirely.
I’m inviting your main character to dinner. What should I make?
I’m glad you asked. Guy is starving. He is so lost in time that the last thing he remembers eating was almost a year ago! Anything other than an MRE would be great!
Your main character is planning a vacation. Where is he going?
I think he has had enough sand to last a lifetime. But, he hates being cold. Somewhere in between the two. He has always wanted to see Seattle.
If your book was made into a movie, who would you like to play the lead characters?
Wow, I can pick anyone!? There are so many great actors to choose from. I am a huge fan of Adam Driver. He is an amazing actor and was in the Marines, so I know he would play the role perfectly.
Of all the books out there, why should readers choose this one?
Guy’s Odyssey is a raw and powerful book about the war in Iraq and the experience of the modern soldier. But it is so much more than that. It is a story about love, friendship, and loss. It is an exciting and thrilling adventure with a purpose written by a veteran who spent 26 months deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.
Fiction can often provide powerful life lessons. What message do you hope readers get from your book?
Revealing the deeper meaning and message of Guy’s Odyssey would be a spoiler. The readers will just have to read it and find out!
