Songs in My Book Change My Memories
Guest Post by Anne Marie Citro
When I started writing, I started adding songs I thought related to the situations in a chapter. Now that song will forever remind me of those characters, and what was happening to them. So many of the songs I use in my books are songs that were near and dear to my heart already. But after giving those songs to my characters, it changed the original memory for me. I only see what it means to my character and lost what it meant to me.
Songs are very important in this book. Each chapter is named after a song title, and how those lyrics could relate to the characters. Music is important to everyone, because it brings us back to a place in time. It reminds us what was going on in our lives, and how we were feeling. It is so personal, and I hope readers take the time to listen to the songs in Lyrics Heart & Soul. I hope you try to figure why I chose that song to be the title for the chapter and how the song relates to Ryder and Francesca.
When I hear a song on the radio and I am really touched by it, I think I could probably write a whole book around that one song. My hat is off to all the writers of songs, because I love that they fit a whole book onto one page. They often make me think about the song long after I have heard it. That is such a talent to possess, and after writing a song for this book, I realized it was harder to write one song then writing half a novel.
Songs and books are timeless and so similar. They make us feel, dream, and relate to our reality. I have raised four sons and nothing makes me happier then when they sing every word to my favorite rock songs. My youngest son has taught me to appreciate country music and my oldest left rock to move to alternative which is taking me longer to get into. I have found that I can appreciate and love at least one or two songs from every type of music, as long as the music has words. No classical for me, it just doesn’t suit my imagination’s OCD tendencies.
Take a minute and think of the songs you love most in the world, and why you like them. Is it because it reminds you of place in time, or does it remind you of a person? Did it give you strength to try something new? Or did it help you get through a hard time in your life? There is a reason music and books are alike, they use words to tell a story and create everlasting memories.
